Cozy Up with Autumn: Apple Crumble with a Magic Touch
The key to fully enjoying the latter end of the year is warm and fresh baked goods to cozy up with, especially with a touch of Mush-Melo magic! But let’s be honest, however you spin it, this dessert is irresistibly good! When it comes to crumble, the golden rule is simple: the topping must rival the fruit filling. And this apple crumble follows that to a tee, with a delightful twist. The result? A perfectly sweet and savory tender apple base, paired with a buttery crunchy top layer, and a dreamy dose of gooey marshmallow goodness throughout.
This crumble balances warm fall flavors with a nutty crunch from toasted walnuts, and the marshmallows melt beautifully into the apples as they bake, creating a smooth, velvety layer that complements the crispy topping. A pinch of salt adds that irresistible sweet-salty contrast, making each bite even more delightful. For an extra indulgent touch, drizzle some caramel sauce on top of your serving. And if there’s enough to go around (totally fine if not) we are entering the season of giving. After all, marshmallows are meant to be shared, right?
You’ll want to use firm apples that hold up during baking. Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, and Braeburn are fantastic choices for a crumble. You can mix and match to balance sweetness and tartness—think half Honeycrisp for that natural sweetness and half Granny Smith for a sharper, tangy flavor. The mix pairs perfectly with the marshmallowy goodness from Mush-Melo!
Ingredients -
Apple Filling
Salted butter, for the baking dish
8 medium baking apples (about 4 pounds), peeled, cored, and sliced
2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
1 c. granulated sugar
1 heaping Tbsp. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. kosher salt
Topping
1 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 c. chopped walnuts
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
Pinch of kosher salt
8 Tbsp. (1 stick) salted butter, melted
15 Mush-Melo marshmallows
Ice cream or warm caramel sauce, for serving
Directions -
Before anything: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 13-by-9-inch baking dish with the top of a stick butter.
For the apples: Put apples in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle with the lemon juice, and toss to coat. In a separate bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples; and toss the apples to coat. Sprinkle the marshmallows over the apples.
For the topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, walnuts, baking powder, baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Stir in the melted butter. Sprinkle the topping in an even layer over the apples.
For the finale: Bake until the topping is slightly crisp and golden brown, 55 minutes to 1 hour. Serve warm or at room temperature on its own or topped with ice cream or caramel sauce (or both).
